What a mid-season finale, and what a great spectrum of audience reaction. We laughed, we cried, we reblogged, and we theorized, and of course, because this is the Supernatural fandom, rabid criticism was part of the package.
As usual, I don’t think all of this criticism is entirely well-founded.
Keep in mind that at this time, everything is pure speculation. Everything. That is the point in putting a cliffhanger there. You’re supposed to be anxious, stunned and upset—it’s what makes you want to know what happens next. We aren’t supposed to know how this resolves. That is what a cliffhanger is. Based on this alone, any claims to know exactly the reasoning or results of Kevin’s death are pure and simply complete speculation.
That being said, as the title may tell you, I think Kevin’s death was vital to the plot. Especially in that Kevin himself probably won’t be too happy about it, whenever we probably see him again.
I actually feel a little better now.
